Gurudwara Sri Bhai Manjh ji Sahib, Kangmai

This Gurdwara is situated at a distance of 20 Km from Hoshiarpur Railway Station on Dasuya-Hoshiarpur Road near Bhunga in Village Kang Mai.

Bhai Manjh Ji was born during the time of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. He was a very rich person and his real name was Tiratha. He used to reside at this place and was a devotee of ‘Sakhi Sarvar Peer’ (Nigahe Sarvar Pir). But he was in search of some Saintly person who could provide him with peace of mind. At that Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji was the Fifth Guru of Sikhs and he used to reside at Amritsar. Bhai Tiratha Ji visited Amritsar with a group of Sikh devotees and went to pay homage to Guru Ji. Bhai Ji requested Guru Ji to grant him Sikhism. Guru Ji said,” It is very difficult to follow Sikhism, you will have to abandon all your wealth”. Bhai Tiratha Ji continued to request. Then Bhai Ji started serving in the Langar (community kitchen) of Guru Ji at Amritsar. He used to bring wood from a nearby forest located at Sultanwind. He faced many difficulties and went through many tests taken by Guru Ji. One Day when he was coming from the forest with a log of woods on his head, he fell into a well due to strong winds. Guru Ji came to know about it through his Divine Powers. Guru Ji reached at the place with his followers and ordered Tiratha Ji to throw woods in the well and come out. But Tiratha Ji requested that the Wood would go wet and the work of the community kitchen would not run. Then the followers took out the wood first and then Bhai Ji was taken out. Guru Ji took Bhai Ji in his arms and said : ” Manjh Piara Guru Ko, Guru Manjh Piara, Manjh Guru Ka Bohitha, Jag Langhanhara “. Now You are not Tiratha, you are Manjh, you are Bohitha meaning you are my beloved. By remembering you people would attain liberation from cycle of birth and death. Your name would remain forever. A Gaddi by your name would be established, whosoever would come to your place and offer Prayers, all his wished would be fulfilled. Guru Ji presented a Loh’ (an iron plate to make Chappatis) to Bhai Manjh Ji , which has been installed at Gurdwara Gaddi Bhai Manjh Ji at Kang Mai.
