Gurudwara Sri Santokhsar Sahib, Amritsar

Gurudwara Sri Tahli (Santokhsar) Sahib is situated in the district city of Amritsar, near Hall Gate. Before ascending to the gaddi, Guru Ram Das Ji came from Goindwal Sahib on the instructions of Sri Guru Amar Das Ji and began excavating a holy tank (Sarovar). Thus, this tank is the first holy tank in Sikh history.

While Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji was having the tank dug, he found a yogi meditating. After some time, the yogi opened his eyes and told Guru Arjan Dev Ji that he had been meditating there for a long time, waiting for Guru Sahib to grant him salvation. He disclosed his name as Santakha and then breathed his last. The tank was subsequently named Santokhsar.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji completed the unfinished excavation work of the tanks, Santokhsar and Amritsar. Baba Buddha Ji was appointed to supervise the construction work. Guru Arjan Dev Ji used to sit under a Tahli tree, hence the Gurudwara is also known as Gurudwara Sri Tahli Sahib.
