Amritsar

The District of Amritsar is situated in Punjab State of Northwestern India. It is 5094 Sq. Km in area. It is surrounded by District Taran Taran in the South, District Kapurthala in the Southeast, District Gurdaspur in the Northeast and Pakistan in the West. The City of Amritsar which is about 114.95 Sq. Km. in area is the headquarter of this District.
Amritsar, literally a Pool of Nectar, derives its name from Amrit Sarovar, the holy tank that surrounds the Golden Temple, the Spiritual and Cultural center of the Sikh religion.
The City of Amritsar was founded by Fourth Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Ram Das Ji in 1574 on the land bought by him for Rs. 700. Upon instructions of Third Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Amar Das Ji , Guru Ram Das Ji built his residence here and moved to this place. At that time this place was known as ‘Guru Da Chak’ and later on it came to be known as ‘Chakk Ram Das’. When Golden Temple was constructed, the City came to be known as Amritsar after the Holy Sarovar.
The City is known for its food and Culture. Amritsari Papad and Warian are liked by all the Indians.
This District has been divided into 4 Tehsils and 5 Sub-Tehsils -Tehsils – Amritsar-I , Amritsar-II , Ajnala , Baba BakalaSub-Tehsils – Attari , Lopoke , Majitha , Ramdas , Tarsika
