Gurudwara Sahib Sungei Petani,Kedah
By the early 1930's, there were a few Sikhs in the Army stationed in Sungai Petani. They obtained a piece of land measuring 1 Rood 14.2 Poles in size to build a Gurdwara Sahib. The original Gurdwara building was made of wood with zinc roofing in 1933. This building was unfortunately destroyed in a fire on 16th April 1991.
Donations to construct the new Gurdwara Sahib building were obtained from the Sikh sangat from all over Malaysia. The Kedah State Government donated RM80,000.00 while the Federal Government donated RM30,000.00. The Total cost of the new double storey Gurdwara Sahib building came to RM500,000.00. The new Gurdwara Sahib was officially declared open on 27thNovember 1992 (=13th Maghar 2049). The Darbar Sahib is located on the first floor. The langgar hall is located on the ground floor. The Granthi Sahib's quarters and two rooms for visitors are located on the left side of the Gurdwara.
There is a Sikh Assistant Registrar of Marriages who officiates at Sikh marriages held in this Gurdwara, if called upon to do so. The actual marriage ceremony is conducted by the Granthi in accordance with Sikh religious rites.
The late Bhai Harbans Singh served as a Granthi in this Gurdwara Sahib for nearly 40 years from 1955 to 1995.
There are also a dozen Sikh children who attend Gurmukhi classes on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Management Committee comprises of the President, Secretary, Treasurer and their assistants as well as four committee members. There are presently three appointed Trustees i.e. Sardar Darshan Singh, Dr Gurnam Singh and Dr GurDas Singh.
There are about 80 Sikh families who participate in the religious activities held in this Gurdwara Sahib. The normal weekly prayers are held on Friday morning from 9.00a.m. to 10.00a.m. The Naujawan programmes are held fortnightly on Saturdays. The Isteri Satsang programme is held on the Sangrand day.
