The Sikh Sangat in Tawau led by Sardar Darbara Singh decided to construct the Gurdwara Sahib building in 1988. The foundation stone of this Gurdwara Sahib was laid by Giani Chanan Singh from the Labuan Gurdwara Sahib in April 1988. This Gurdwara Sahib complex covers an area of 0.25 acres, which has been donated by the Seikhu family. The cost of this building came to RM235,000.00 out of which RM135,000.00 was donated by the Sabah State Government. This new Gurdwara Sahib building was officially declared open on 17th September 1989 by YB Datuk Bernard Giluk Dompok, the then Minister of Finance, State of Sabah.

The main building is a double storey brick structure. The Darbar Sahib is located on the first floor while the langgar hall is located on the ground floor. The Gurdwara Sahib kitchen is located in a separate building. Another separate double storey building houses the Granthi's quarters and four rooms for Sikh visitors and ragi jathas.

The Management Committee comprises of the President, Secretary, Treasurer, their assistants and five committee members. The present Trustees are Sardar Darbara Singh, Sardar Hartit Singh and Sardar Pritam Singh. There are presently 10 Sikh families residing in Tawau who participate in the religious activities in this Gurdwara Sahib. The usual weekly prayers are held on Sunday mornings.
