The District of Bathinda is situated in Punjab State of Northwestern India. It is 3367 Sq. Km. in area. It is surrounded by District Mukatsar in the West, District Faridkot in the Northwest, District Moga in the North, District Sangrur in the Northeast, District Mansa in the Southeast and District Sirsa of Haryana State in the South. The City of Bathinda is the headquarter of this District.
Bathinda has been in existence since the ancient Period of History and was known as Bikramgarh. According to Ibn Battuta, an Islamic traveller, it was known as Batrind. It is generally believed that Bathinda was built by Bhati Rao, son of Bal Band. He and his descendants became rulers of Punjab in the 6th Century AD. They named the City as Bitunda or Whatinda after their Surname, which finally changed to Bathinda. Bathinda is one of the biggest Cotton markets in Northern India.
